Full Duplex Voice AI: Why Real Conversations Need Both Lanes Open

How full duplex voice models listen while they talk, and what that means for live support calls.

Most voice AI still talks like a walkie-talkie. You speak, you wait, it answers, and if you try to cut in, it keeps going or loses the thread entirely.

People don't talk that way. On a real call, both sides listen and speak at the same time. We say "mm-hm" while the other person is mid-sentence. We interrupt to correct a detail. We pause to think without handing over the floor.

Full duplex voice models are built to handle that kind of conversation. Here's how they work, why they matter for customer experience, and how Maven Voice puts them to work on real support calls.

What "full duplex" means

The term comes from telecommunications. It describes how a channel handles two-way traffic.

  • Half duplex: Data moves in both directions, one direction at a time. A walkie-talkie is the classic example. Press to talk, release to listen, and say "over" so the other side knows it's their turn.
  • Full duplex: Data moves in both directions at once. A phone call is full duplex. You can hear the other person while you're talking.

Most voice agents today behave like half duplex systems, even though they run over full duplex phone lines. The agent waits for silence, decides the caller is done, generates a reply, and plays it back. While it's speaking, it's mostly deaf.

A full duplex voice model keeps listening while it talks. It processes incoming audio and produces outgoing audio in parallel, so it can react to the caller in real time.

How full duplex voice models work

To see what changes, start with how most voice agents are built today. The common approach is a cascaded pipeline:

  1. Speech-to-text transcribes the caller's audio.
  2. Turn detection waits for a pause long enough to decide the caller has finished.
  3. A language model reads the transcript and writes a reply.
  4. Text-to-speech turns that reply back into audio.

Each handoff adds delay, and each step throws away information. Transcription strips out tone, hesitation, and emphasis. Turn detection guesses based on silence, so a caller who pauses to find an account number gets cut off, while a caller who talks fast waits through an awkward gap.

Full duplex models collapse that chain. They work directly on audio in both directions, often called speech-to-speech, and they run listening and speaking as two continuous streams. That unlocks a few behaviors that matter on a live call:

  • Barge-in. When a caller interrupts with "No, the other address," the model stops, absorbs the correction, and adjusts. It doesn't finish a script the caller has already rejected.
  • Backchannels. Small cues like "got it" or "okay" signal the agent is following along without taking over the turn.
  • Natural turn-taking. The model reads intonation and context along with silence, so it can tell a thinking pause from a finished thought.
  • Paralinguistic signal. Frustration, confusion, and urgency come through in how something is said. A model that hears audio directly can respond to that, where a transcript would have flattened it.

Why it matters for customer experience

Phone support is where conversation quality shows up fastest. Callers are often stressed, multitasking, or calling because self-service already failed them. Every awkward pause or talked-over correction costs patience.

Full duplex changes a few things a support leader cares about:

  • Fewer escalations from frustration. Callers press zero when they feel unheard. An agent that handles interruptions and corrections keeps them in the conversation.
  • Faster calls. Callers can jump ahead, confirm details mid-sentence, and skip prompts they don't need.
  • Cleaner data capture. Account numbers, addresses, and order details often arrive in fragments with corrections. Listening continuously makes it easier to get them right the first time.
  • A brand experience that sounds human. Voice is still the channel customers use for their most urgent problems. How the agent sounds becomes how the company sounds.

What makes Maven Voice different

A natural-sounding voice is only half the job. On a support call, the agent also has to understand the problem, take action in your systems, and stay inside your policies. Maven Voice pairs full duplex conversation with the reasoning and integrations of the Maven AGI platform.

Speech-to-speech in production. Maven Voice runs voice-to-voice models on live enterprise calls, so tone and pacing stay intact from the caller's first word. Our partner IBEX has called Maven the first to bring speech-to-speech into full production for enterprise use.

Engine choice without rebuilding. Maven Voice works with leading voice providers, including OpenAI and Phonic. You pick the engine that fits your use case. Maven handles orchestration, reasoning, and integration, so swapping or adding an engine doesn't mean starting over.

Conversations that end in action. Maven Voice connects to the systems behind your support team. It can verify an order and ship a replacement, lock a card and issue a new one, or reschedule an appointment, all in the same call.

Built for messy, real-world audio. We tested Maven Voice in subways, airports, and sports stadiums. Callers don't always phone in from a quiet room, and your agent needs to hear them anyway.

57 languages, switched mid-call. Callers can change languages during the conversation, and Maven Voice follows.

Fits your contact center. Customers dial the same numbers. Maven Voice works with your existing routing and platforms, and when a human is needed, it hands off with full context so the caller never repeats themselves.

Enterprise-grade security. Built-in audio and text redaction protects sensitive information in motion and at rest, backed by 15 certifications and assessments, including ISO 42001 and PCI-DSS 4.0 Level 1.

Voice customers like Papaya Pay are already using Maven Voice to deliver 24/7 phone support while keeping quality and control in their hands.

Hear it for yourself

The fastest way to understand full duplex voice is to talk to it. Interrupt it. Change your mind mid-sentence. Switch languages. Then watch it resolve the issue end to end.
